INFLUENZA VACCINATION DURING PREGNANCY | Vaccination remains the best protection pregnant women and their newborn babies have against influenza.

Despite influenza vaccination being available free to pregnant women on the National Immunisation Program, vaccination rates remain low with only 1 in 3 pregnant women receiving the influenza vaccine. Influenza infection during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery and even death in newborns and very young babies. Pregnant women can have the vaccine at any time during pregnancy and they benefit from it all through the year.

For more information, check out this video by Professor Brendan Murphy,Chief Medical Officer: youtu.be/IhUoMPPGgZA or visit: bit.ly/2sCZZ9bInfluenza vaccination should be a routine part of antenatal care. Ask your doctor or nurse today about the free flu shot. Find out more here: immunise...

SKIN CANCER TRAINING | Last week over 35 GPs in Cairns and Atherton had the opportunity to hear from Dr Vin Rajeswaran and Dr. Damien Foong on skin cancer and excisions. This was followed with a hands on demonstration, where GPs got to practice cutting off a skin cancer site and follow up with a simple suturing technique on some pork hocks!

Great feedback that the workshop was well needed and run, and the presenters were engaging and knowledgeable.

Thanks to Byrnes Quality Meats for supplying the hocks and Cairns Skills Centre at Cairns Hospital for providing the instruments.
