DIABETES WORKSHOP - MACKAY | Prevention, early intervention and management of diabetes

Northern Queensland PHN, in partnership with Diabetes Queensland and the Heart Foundation, held a dinner workshop on Tuesday night in Mackay which covered aspects of prevention and early intervention using Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed (DESMOND), SMARTS, and My Health for Life education and early intervention programs.

We were fortunate to have Director of Endocrinology and Diabetes at The Townsville Hospital, Dr Kunwarjit Sangla, present to discuss the important role general practice plays in diagnosing and actively managing obese and diabetic patients.

AFL CAPE YORK ANNOUNCEMENT | On the weekend, Senator Bridget McKenzie and Warren Entsch MP visited AFL Cape York House to announce AFL Cape York as a recipient of $105,000 in funding as part of NQPHN's health promotions grants.

The funding will contribute towards their 'On the move with deadly foods' initiative, encouraging Indigenous children to embrace healthy eating habits and the benefits of regular physical activity.

AFL Cape York has had a strong presence within northern Queensland communities for the past 20 years, and have witnessed the positive health and educational benefits Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth have gained through involvement with their programs.

Northern Queensland PHN is looking forward to working collaboratively with AFL Cape York on this great initiative, to help the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children of Cape York to live happier, healthier, and longer lives.
